Becel Ride for Heart Event
June 3 2007
On Sunday June 3 2007 members from
the Toronto, EMO, Peel Region and Durham Region ARES groups provided communications
service for the Becel Ride for Heart Event. This year over 12,000 riders
participated in the bike-a-thon that stretched over a 75 km route that
started at the CNE grounds in Toronto traveling along the Gardiner Expressway,
up the Don Valley Parkway to York Mills Rd. then back to the CNE grounds.
Amateur radio operators were posted
at strategic locations along the route, at rest stops, CNE starting point
and Toronto Transportation Camera Centre (Command Post) located
in the Toronto Emergency Operations Centre. The amateur radio station setup
in the command post worked directly with Police, EMS, Roads Department
staff and Event Organizers which followed the route of the bike-a-thon
with camera equipment (Eyes on Toronto).
The ARES team provided injured and
ill rider reports, separated parents and children, and route progress directly
to the command post station where officials where able to dispatch the
necessary emergency response vehicles to deal with the situations (over
22 incidents were reported).
The six hour event was considered
very successful and ARES support appreciated by officials.

Heart
and Stroke Foundation Back grounder
The Heart and Stroke Foundation is
dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for not just heart
and stroke patients, but all Canadians. To realize our mission, we fund
the best world-class research which results in medical advances, social
change and education that prevent and reduce death and disability from
heart disease and stroke.
Reaching around the world
Heart and Stroke Foundation research
being conducted at McMaster University is studying the associations between
environment and genetic factors on developing conditions such as obesity,
diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension, which are a significant cause
of heart disease. This EpiDREAM study will follow nearly 16,000 people
from 21 countries for a period of five years.
Reversing the effects of stroke
The Heart and Stroke Foundation
is revolutionizing how we prevent and treat stroke in every province in
Canada through its partnership with the Canadian Stroke Network. In addition
to the research that continues to provide better diagnosis, treatment and
recovery for stroke patients, the Foundation pioneered the use of a clot-busting
drug that, when accessed quickly, can actually reverse the effects. So
for many patients, it's as if the stroke never occurred.
Speeding recovery for young heart
patients
Very little research is being performed
in the area of rehabilitation for children with congenital heart defects.
That's why today we're funding research at the Hospital for Sick Children
that will compare two different rehabilitation programs that encourage
children with serious heart conditions to be more physically active after
surgery. The results of this project will tell us the best way to improve
the health of these children so that they remain fit and active and lead
happier lives.
