Preparedness Day 2007

Scouts and
their families visited the Toronto Fire Academy/EMS Training Centre on
May 12th for Scouts Emergency Prepardness Day.
They seen the
Toronto Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service in action, learned
what is needed to build a 72 hour Emergency Kit and participated in a MedVent
First Aid challange, plus many more activities and displays.

| As part of
Scouts Canada Centennial Celebration, this busy fun filled event provided
all participants with an increased awareness to emergency preparedness
through hands on activities and information.
Members of
Dufferin County ARES, Toronto ARES and had oportunity to speak with scouts
and their families about the role Amateur Radio Emergency Service plays
in public safety.
The Dufferin
County ARES Group displayed their Emergency Communications Mobile that
is equipped with HF/VHF/UHF transeivers and digital communications.
The Toronto
ARES Group had an indoor display of the different types of communications
equipment that is used by amateur radio operators and passed out information
brochures on public safety and emergency preparedness published by Emergency
Management Ontario. |

Toronto MedVents
Toronto
EMS, in partnership with Scouts Canada, operates a vocational Venturer
Company and Rover Crew for male and female youth ages 14 to 25. Since Scouting
is synonymous with public service, the youth are encouraged and supported
to consider a career in paramedicine or other related fields and are invited
to participate in many Scouting and EMS/City public service events such
as clothing and food drives, displays and parades and festivities. Physical
fitness is actively promoted and outdoor activities (skiing, canoeing,
camping etc.) are planned throughout the Scout year.

Toronto Heavy Urban Search
and Rescue (HUSAR)
HUSAR,
as defined by Emergency Preparedness Canada, as: "The location of trapped
persons in collapsed structures using dogs and sophisticated search equipment;
the use of heavy equipment such as cranes to remove debris; the work to
breach, shore, remove and lift structural components; the treatment and
removal of victims; and the securing of partially or completely collapsed
structures."

Amateur Radio Emergency
Service (ARES)
ARES is composed of licensed
radio amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and
equipment for communications duty in the public service, when disaster
strikes. Ontario A.R.E.S. operates a series of networks utilizing a wide
range of telecommunications equipment and technology and through objective
planning of these resources deliver an auxiliary communications system
in the interest of Public Safety and Service.
